Content: Om, let us meditate on the infinitely merciful Lord Shiva’s grace. May his mercy liberate us from the grip of suffering, illness, birth and death, and let us experience the immortality of the soul.

translation: In the beginning it was only I who existed before creation, there was no being or non-being (sat-asat), nor was there their primary cause, Prakriti, the material nature. That which exists after the creation of the Universe is still I, and after annihilation what remains will also be I.

rite 'rtham yat pratiyeta      na pratiyeta chatmani

tad vidyad atmano mayam      yathabhaso yatha tamah

translation: Every endeavour that is not directed at the study of the Self (Atman), must be considered illusion (Maya). Know it as only the distorted reflections of the reality (abhasa), the dark ignorance (tamas).

yatha mahanti bhutani      bhuteshu chavaceshv anu

pravishtany apravishtani      tatha teshu na teshv aham

translation: The great elements of the Universe (Mahabhuta) enter into every physical entity from the smallest to the greatest, yet in fact they remain detached from them all. Similarly, I Myself also exist within every constituting element of the Universe, and at the same time I am outside of everything.

etavad eva jijnasyam      tattva-jijnasunatmanah

anvaya-vyatirekabhyam      yat syat sarvatra sarvada

translation: To those who are in eternal contact with me and worship me with love, I shall give discernment (Buddhi-Yoga) and wisdom of devotion by which they can reach me.

Rig-veda 10.90.1–7.

Om sahasrashirsha purushah | sahasrakshas sahasrapat |

sa bhumim vishvato vritva atyatishthaddashangulam ||

meaning: Om. The Supreme Lord, in the form of the universe, has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes and a thousand feet, and he contains all the living entities. Having pervaded the universe completely to give it existence, being independent, he extended himself even beyond the universe by ten fingers.

purusha evedam sarvam | yad bhutam yaccha bhavyam

utamritatvasyeshanah | yadannenatirohati ||

meaning: The universes, past, present and future, are the manifestations of the Supreme Lord who expands himself as Purusha. He is the Lord of Immortality, yet he manifests himself in the universe as Purusha so that the jiva-souls may enjoy material fruits.

etavan asya mahima | ato jyayamshcha purushah |

pado ’sya vishva bhutani | tripad asyamritam divi ||

meaning: The past, present and future universes are the manifestations of the Lord’s energy, but the Lord himself is much greater. The material creation is but one quarter portion, while the eternal nature in the spiritual sky exists in three quarter portions.

tripadurdhva udaitpurushah | pado ’syeha bhavatpunah |

tato vishvanvyakramat | sashananashane abhi ||

meaning: The three quarters portion of the Lord is spiritual; therefore, it transcended the material portion. The Lord of the one quarter portion manifested the universe again, as he had done so many times before. The Lord of the one quarter portion began the work of creation by going round and round, thus giving form to all animate and inanimate objects.

tasmadviradjayata | virajo adhi purushah |

sa jato atyarichyata | pashchadbhumimatho purah ||

meaning: From that Lord the Virat or universe was born, and in that the universe of the Virat Purusha, the Paramatma (Supreme Spirit) of the universe was born. The manifested Virat Purusha created the earth and the different bodies of the jiva-souls.

yatpurushena havisha | deva yajnamatanvata ||

vasanto asyasidajyam | grishma idhmassharaddhavih ||

meaning: The devas (demigods), the first beings manifested, performed a mental sacrifice for the completion of creation, using the Virat Purusha (all the elements making up the material world) as the offering. Spring was the ghee (clarified butter), summer was the firewood, and autumn was the offering.

saptasyasanparidhayah | trih sapta samidhah kritah |

deva yadyajnam tanvanah | abadhnanpurusham pashum ||

meaning: In this sacrifice, there were seven sharp vetiver blades (mantras vibrating on the seven Vedic poetic metres) scattered around the fire (for protection from the rakshasas), and there were twenty-one pieces of firewood (12 months, 6 seasons, and 3 worlds). The devas who were performing the mental sacrifice (mental and fine physical), tied the Virat Purusa to the column of the sacrificial fire, in the same way a sacrificial animal is offered. Let us meditate on the life-giving, brilliant Divine Source, that which radiates through the Sun God, the Father of Light, who created the universe and sustains the Celestial and Terrestrial beings. He removes all obstacles, sin and ignorance, and increases vitality. Let us pray the Mother of Light, who appears in the Sun-disk, to illuminate our mind and purify our heart, so that we can live in God’s enlightening radiance! GURU GAYATRI

om gurudevaya vidmahe

parabrahmanya dhimahi

tanno guruh pracodayat

Let us meditate on Gurudeva, our spiritual master, who is the incarnated representative of the Supreme Brahman, and who illuminates our consciousness with knowledge about our true Self. Let us meditate, so that Gurudeva always show us the way towards illumination, and inspire our thoughts, desires and acts on the path of consciousness.
